6 Reasons for Faculty, Staff and Librarians to Participate in the Work Study Program

The Work Study Program provides a pathway for faculty, staff and librarians to hire students into meaningful work integrated learning roles at the University. Over 5,000 students are hired annually through the Work Study Program across our three campuses. Below are six reasons to consider hiring a Work Study student to support your work.

1.    Two Pathways to Support Your Work

The Work Study Program now offers two possible opportunities to support your work:

  • The Work Experience Stream is designed to support students in developing and articulating workplace skills and competencies and in building workplace experience and knowledge.
  • The Research Experience Stream is designed to support students in developing and articulating workplace skills and competencies, building workplace experience and knowledge and in locating and participating in faculty-led research opportunities.

2.    Support Student Development

Through the Work Study Program, you will contribute to the further development of students’ professional and / or research skills as well as enhancing their classroom learnings. 94% of students who participated in the 2021-22 Work Study program indicated that their Work Study position provided them with meaningful work experience and 95% indicated their Work Study position helped them gain transferable skills that will help them in their future career.

3.    Funding Support!

Approved Work Study positions receive central funding to cover 70% of the pay and benefits ($15.90 / hour + 10% benefits) for hours up to a maximum per cycle (100 hours for the Summer Work Study cycle and 200 for the Fall-Winter Work Study cycle). The hiring unit is responsible for the remaining 30% of the $15.90 / hour pay rate and 10.25% benefits. Hiring units can choose to top-up the rate of pay and are responsible for covering 100% of any top-up amount or hours worked in excess of the maximum hours per cycle.

4.    Supervisor Support

The Work Study Program has structures and supports, including a job board, communication networks, workshops and program cycles to help you in advertising and effectively filling your Work Study position(s).

5.    Resources

The Work Study Program has developed a series of Work Study eModules (and the Professional Development Workbook) to support Work Study students as they identify and set learning goals, track their progress towards meeting these goals and reflect on the value of their experience within the Work Study Program.

6.    Opportunity to Learn With and From Current Students

As a current Work Study supervisor shared: “One of the benefits I have found with the WS program is that I have been able to tap into students that come from diverse educational backgrounds. This has indeed added to my own perspective on my research and open new avenues to me!”.
